Experiments in Gamelan

Concerts, Film, Presentations and Participatory Workshops:

-To promote new works utilizing or inspired by Indonesian Gamelan, especially works that involve the usage of electronics.

-Establish new connections between North American and Indonesian muscians & artists. 

-Invite wild experimentation in the genre as well as make gamelan music more accessible to distinguishing listeners.

-Close the loop between major trends of gamelan and noise music in contemporary Indonesia.

Performing artists include Cordey Lopez, Hirotaka Inuzuka, and Matthew Clough-Hunter (of Gamelan Merdu Kumala from Los Angeles); Mark Cetilia and Zach Hazen (Providence, RI); Laura Cetilia (Providence, RI); and Bromp Treb aka Neil “Cloaca” Young (Northampton, MA).

In addition to performances by gamelan musicians and experimental artists, an international recording project spanning the USA, Canada, and Bali (Jonathan Adams and Zach Hejny) called Insitu Recordings will present their investigations in the field of gamelan and electronic music in Bali, Indonesia. Jonathan Adams (Vancouver, BC) and Zach Hejny (Santa Cruz, CA) of Insitu Recordings will screen videos of new work by Balinese artists I Putu Gede Sukaryana and I Putu Arya Deva Suryanegara and perform a live remix. Evan O’Donnell (New York City) will exhibit an installation titled “Sekar DMN” examining the more subliminal features of gamelan music and the culture of its surroundings in Bali.

The event is open to the public of all ages. A donation of $20 will be suggested upon entrance.
