English Vinglish (2012), 134 mins. Hindi with English Subtitles, Directed by Gauri Shinde
This month's Bollywood Film Club feature is a gently impactful story of awakening self-empowerment. Shashi, a Indian housewife is made to feel insecure by her family and society-at-large for not speaking English. When she visits her sister in NYC for a brief vacation, she is inspired to enroll into a English language class. Shashi becomes determined in spite of many obsticles and over the course of her journey, transforms into a more self-assured and confident woman in the process. Using a sensitive and lighthearted approach, this film attempts to capture the inherent struggle many people all over the world face with the barrier of the English language.
This immensely popular film marked the comeback of India's biggest female star...Sridevi, the star of more than 200 movies: admired for her sparkling comic timing, dancing prowess and considerable acting range,“Sri” ruled the marquee from the mid-‘70s to the early ‘90s before settling down to raise two daughters with her husband, producer Boney Kapoor. It took a very special project to lure this iconic talent back to the big screen, and English Vinglish was it. Directed and written by Gauri Shinde, who brought her own life experience into the creation of the film: “It is my way of saying ‘Sorry’ and ‘Thank you’ to my mother, and a tribute to women.”
