Female Imagination of the Global South: Films + Q&A

Epsilon Spires is proud to present The Female Imagination of the Global South: Film Screening and Q&A in collaboration with In Situ Polyculture Commons

A visceral dive into the myths, dreams, and archetypes that live in the female imagination of the global south, from the darkest to the brightest. Both directresses explore themes such as gender and racial violence, pleasure, sexual abuse, freedom, power, and motherhood. Within our contemporary context of a neo-liberal patriarchal society, the film explores how such human experiences have shaped our collective unconscious nonlinearly since the dawn of civilizations and prehistoric times. 

Following the Screening, we invite the audience to participate in a 40 min Q&A with the directresses Guta Galli and Jessica Fertonani Cooke.  7:40pm: Doors Open with Refreshments - 8 pm: Film Screening- 9 pm: Artist Q&A. Mature Audiences Only.

ARTIST BIOS:

Guta Galli is an interdisciplinary artist from São Paulo who works with performance, video, drawings, photography and cinema. The body is the basis and axis of her work, and Galli’s themes speak of the intersections between gender, violence and the impact of patriarchal neoliberalism on contemporary bodies, always with a feminist perspective. She has a postgraduate degree in Photography (FAAP - SP) and a master's degree in Contemporary Art. (SFAI-USA). She had solo exhibitions in Rotterdam, San Francisco, California, and São Paulo and also participated in exhibitions and art fairs in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Santiago, Rome (Biennale), London, Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities in the USA, where she lived for almost 6 years and performed solo or in groups in several galleries and museums; such as SFMOMA, Contemporary Jewish Museum, De Young Museum, BAMPFA and Berkeley Art Museum.

Jessica Fertonani Cooke is a Brazilian/US artist. Her work deals with mestizo identities, de-colonial processes of the body and power struggles between the Americas North to South. She holds a Master of Arts from SFAI in San Francisco and a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the University of Arts in Berlin, Germany (UdK). Her work is largely informed through her research on monoculture of the body, ecological decline in site specific territories, and indigenous rights, such with the Tohono O’odham on the US/Mexico border in the Sonoran Desert. She has participated in selected exhibitions such as Untitled Art Fair in Miami, CityXVenice at the Venice Architecture Biennale, Climate Provocations by Pratt SoA, New York, and the Nars Foundation in Brooklyn. She directed, braiding FIELD in 2021, winner of the Franklin Furnace Fund Performance Award in New York and co-directed a feature film with Guillermo Gómez-Peña called 'la malinche, en tiempos de pandemic' in Mexico in 2022.

CINEMATOGRAPHER:

Roc Morin is a filmmaker, journalist, and photographer based in Los Angeles, California. Roc is the creator of World Dream Atlas, author of &, director of You Are My Audience, and producer of Family Romance LLC, directed by Werner Herzog, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Roc was formerly an EMT for the Fire Department of New York, a psychology professor at The City College of New York, and a war correspondent in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.
