Join us for a night of transcendent music featuring piano works by the maverick composer Moondog! Presented by trimbist Julian Calv, pianist Alex Stewart, and vocalist/percussionist Sarah Penna. Moondog's music forms an unexpected link between the resurgent science of counterpoint, Arapaho, Navajo, Blackfoot, and Sioux rhythms and song forms, the art of jazz improvisation, and the beginnings of a repetitive and minimalist aesthetic. Spanning Moondog's career, a variety of compositions will be performed with introductions about the music from Julian-- who studied with Moondog's only student, Stefan Lakatos.
Moondog (1916-1999) was born Louis Thomas Hardin Jr., and was a blind American classical composer, performer, poet, music theoretician, and inventor of musical instruments. His strongly rhythmic, contrapuntal pieces and arrangements influenced composers of minimal music – American composer Steve Reich has called him the "Grandfather of minimalism."
