East and West (1923, 84 mins), is a delicious comedy that bears the distinction of being the earliest surviving Yiddish language film and the earliest recorded performance of Molly Picon, then just 25, already on the path from Yiddish theater to a long career in film, radio, television, and worldwide stage tours with her husband and frequent co-star, Jacob Kalich. A wonderful role model for the renegade in all of us, best known today for her role as Yente the matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof (1971), Picon shines here as a spirited New York girl who loves boxing, eating, and stirring up trouble— and could not be more different from her religious European relatives.
