About the event
“Each time something appeared that looked like a plotline, I would cross it out,” -Director Louis Malle.
Structured like the logic of dreams and modeled on Alice in Wonderland, BLACK MOON (1975, 100 mins) is one of Louis Malle’s most experimental films, a trip down the rabbit hole following an anarchic set of events and opaque metaphors that both defy and demand critical scrutiny. After skirting the horrors of a mysterious war between genders being waged in the countryside, beautiful young Lily (Cathryn Harrison) takes refuge in a remote farmhouse, where she becomes embroiled in the surreal domestic life of an extremely unconventional family. Evocatively shot by cinematographer Sven Nykvist (the director of photography on many Ingmar Bergman films), Black Moon is a Freudian tale of adolescent sexuality set in a postapocalyptic world of shifting identities, elusive motivations and talking animals.
