About the event

Last evening to view NATURE/NURTURE, an exhibition in our Sanctuary Gallery featuring new work by Brent Birnbaum and Christin Ripley.

Ice Bitch is the current production alias of visual artist J. Ivcevich who also has DJ’d under the J. Stroke moniker for over 25 years. As a DJ, J. Stroke has been known as a selector of eclectic taste with little regard for genre parameters. The proper tune for the right moment in various situations and environments has been Stroke’s guiding principle. The Ice Bitch project was originally intended to be a way to separate previous productions with a stripped down, minimal, dub-techno sound. The name derived from how a Basque friend pronounced J’s surname. In typical J. Stroke style, the music produced under the Ice Bitch alias has mutated and evolved into something unintended when the alias emerged.

For this performance, Ice Bitch will perform an improvisation he debuted on Governor’s Island spring of 2019 and performed at BAM in Brooklyn in February of 2020 as part of the Never Records sessions. The work is rooted in analog drones, arpeggiating synths and subtle churning rhythm patterns pulsing through dub delays and oscillating filters. The volume, acoustics of the space and possible inclusion of the pipe organ will ensure a unique, one-off performance.
